What is alopecia and how is it treated at Dermoperfection?

Did you know we can treat alopecia at Dermoperfection’s medical skin and cosmetic clinic right here in Birmingham?

Approximately 1 in 50 people will suffer from alopecia areata in their lifetime – this is regardless of gender, race or age, although many develop this before they turn 30.

There are 3 main types of alopecia:

Alopecia areata: Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, areata means patch. This type of alopecia refers to baldness appearing anywhere on the body; from the scalp, beard, brows, and lashes to the wider bodyparts such as legs and armpits.

Alopecia totalis: Loss of all hair to the scalp

Alopecia universalis: Total loss of hair, globally.

Alopecia is a condition of the immune system, where hair follicles are attacked by white blood cells, resulting in them shrinking and stopping hair production. Patches are usually oval and small when they first appear, growing in size as the alopecia progresses. Genetics are known to play a part in alopecia development.

Milly, one of Dermoperfection’s patients, has told us about her treatment journey for alopecia:

“I was first diagnosed with alopecia ten years ago. After losing half a head of my blonde hair and confidence whilst trying every hair loss treatment available to me on the market, l had nearly given up all hope of recovery. I knew the trigger for alopecia was thought to be stress, but in truth, there is very little evidence that factually outlines the causes and stimulus for alopecia areata.

“Throughout my hair loss journey, I visited world-leading trichologists, bought every vitamin supplement under the sun, and even quit my high-powered media job in London, moving back to the country and retraining to be a nurse to try to live a more settled and structured life. I couldn’t find evidence of any treatment that worked until one-day, l came across a medical report documenting the hair growth experienced by alopecia candidates who trialled steroid injections to the scalp in collaboration with the oral steroid Predisalone.

“I was hesitant at first; I knew the contra-indications associated with steroids, such as a weakened immune system and weight gain, however, l was desperate. I put my faith in this new treatment and miraculously it worked! After the second treatment of topical steroid injections and two weeks’ worth of Predisalone, new fuzzy baby hair covered my bald patches! I also did not experience any weight gain and my immune system seemed to cope brilliantly.

I had trusted Stu at Dermoperfection with all aspects of my aesthetic treatments before and so knew he was the go-to professional to help me with my hair growth journey. Stu explained how steroids suppress the immune cells that are attacking hair follicles so that hair can regrow. And grow it did! To date, Dermoperfection has cured every bald patch l have developed and provided empathetic aftercare and emotional support throughout the process. No other practitioner l can recommend more highly than Stu at Dermoperfection. I am incredibly grateful for his kindness and hard work in facilitating my recovery.”
