What is alopecia and how is it treated at Dermoperfection?

Did you know we can treat alopecia at Dermoperfection’s medical skin and cosmetic clinic right here in Birmingham?

Approximately 1 in 50 people will suffer from alopecia areata in their lifetime – this is regardless of gender, race or age, although many develop this before they turn 30.

There are 3 main types of alopecia:

Alopecia areata: Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, areata means patch. This type of alopecia refers to baldness appearing anywhere on the body; from the scalp, beard, brows, and lashes to the wider bodyparts such as legs and armpits.

Alopecia totalis: Loss of all hair to the scalp

Alopecia universalis: Total loss of hair, globally.

Alopecia is a condition of the immune system, where hair follicles are attacked by white blood cells, resulting in them shrinking and stopping hair production. Patches are usually oval and small when they first appear, growing in size as the alopecia progresses. Genetics are known to play a part in alopecia development.

Milly, one of Dermoperfection’s patients, has told us about her treatment journey for alopecia:

“I was first diagnosed with alopecia ten years ago. After losing half a head of my blonde hair and confidence whilst trying every hair loss treatment available to me on the market, l had nearly given up all hope of recovery. I knew the trigger for alopecia was thought to be stress, but in truth, there is very little evidence that factually outlines the causes and stimulus for alopecia areata.

“Throughout my hair loss journey, I visited world-leading trichologists, bought every vitamin supplement under the sun, and even quit my high-powered media job in London, moving back to the country and retraining to be a nurse to try to live a more settled and structured life. I couldn’t find evidence of any treatment that worked until one-day, l came across a medical report documenting the hair growth experienced by alopecia candidates who trialled steroid injections to the scalp in collaboration with the oral steroid Predisalone.

“I was hesitant at first; I knew the contra-indications associated with steroids, such as a weakened immune system and weight gain, however, l was desperate. I put my faith in this new treatment and miraculously it worked! After the second treatment of topical steroid injections and two weeks’ worth of Predisalone, new fuzzy baby hair covered my bald patches! I also did not experience any weight gain and my immune system seemed to cope brilliantly.

I had trusted Stu at Dermoperfection with all aspects of my aesthetic treatments before and so knew he was the go-to professional to help me with my hair growth journey. Stu explained how steroids suppress the immune cells that are attacking hair follicles so that hair can regrow. And grow it did! To date, Dermoperfection has cured every bald patch l have developed and provided empathetic aftercare and emotional support throughout the process. No other practitioner l can recommend more highly than Stu at Dermoperfection. I am incredibly grateful for his kindness and hard work in facilitating my recovery.”

Patient journey with Cosmelan at Dermoperfection

Mesoestetic Cosmelan is a revolutionary treatment that your skin deserves!

Want a truly effective solution to melasma, age spots, sun spots, superficial scars and uneven skin tone? Try Cosmelan’s skin peel, which is suitable for all skin tones and types, and produces life-changing, long-term results!

Requiring 10-12 days recovery time, this trademarked depigmentation solution promotes freshly healed healthy skin after a short period of intense peeling.

Cosmelan targets the root cause of pigmentation, inhibiting the overproduction of tyrosinase so your skin remains beautifully clear in the months following treatment.

What’s the experience of Cosmelan like for the patient though? Milly, who visited Dermoperfection for this treatment, says this:

“I can advocate for the transformative effects Cosmelan had upon my skin after trialling the treatment four months ago. My pigmentation issues came from years of using hair removal creams and laser treatments. I felt insecure and self-conscious about these markings on my face, so consequently would never go anywhere without foundation and heavy powder to cover these imperfections.

I visited Stu at Demoperfection for my initial Cosmelan consultation. Stu prescribed Cosmelan 1 (the initial skin peel) and Cosmelan 2 (the follow-up products). I had read up extensively on the intensity of the skin peel, along with the rave reviews of people across the world recommending the treatments, so I felt confident in my decision to proceed.

Stu double-cleansed my skin to ensure the procedure was sterile. He then applied the thick mud-like coating of Cosmelan 1. I was worried l would feel some discomfort but in truth, the product smelt nice and goes on like any other mask, cooling and soothing. I was instructed to leave the product on my skin for 12 hours, it slowly dried and flaked, l washed off the residue and went to bed. Throughout the weeks that followed l adhered to phase 2, at-home treatments, these included the following.

Cosmelan 2: home depigmenting cream that intensifies the results of cosmelan 1, keeping melanin production under control and preventing the appearance of new skin spots.

Melan recovery: balm with soothing and restoring effect for sensitive and reddened skin. It helps soothe and restore the skin’s balance and comfort during the Cosmelan treatment.

Melan 130 pigment control: sunscreen with colour that helps control pigmentation. It protects the skin from broad-spectrum solar radiation and helps control skin pigmentation.

I was grateful for the masks l wore to work as a nurse, my skin did redden, flake and felt tight when l smiled or frowned. I kept my soothing balm with me at all times and rather than rubbing or picking at the skin, which can cause scarring, l simply applied the balm and avoided any makeup.

Just as Stu had promised, after two weeks of peeling, a fresh, dewy skin shone through. The pigmentation above my upper lip l felt so embarrassed about was gone! The laser marks people previously had commented on had vanished, and my skin felt resurfaced. Today l wear the Mesoestetic sunscreen provided as part of the full Cosmelan treatment. l still don’t wear foundation and the compliments l receive about my skin have boosted my confidence. I can fully appreciate why Cosmelan receives 5-star reviews and acclaim across the world!”

Profhilo – why is it so popular?

The future of skincare is here with our hugely popular Profhilo treatment!

But what makes Profhilo special? This tweakment offers subtle rejuvenation to those who want to tighten the skin and improve hydration subtly but effectively. Patients love the younger, dewy and glowing complexion they notice afterwards!

We have offered Profhilo in our medical skin and cosmetic clinic for 5 years now, and so many of our patients have enjoyed the naturally noticeable results, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with other aesthetic treatments, including DiamondGlow and professional skin peels.

Semi-permanent treatments like Profhilo are ideal if you are new to aesthetics, or want to switch to a more subtle alternative compared to anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.

Many have dubbed Profhilo an “injectable moisturiser”, delivering hyaluronic acid deeper into the skin than any topical HA serum could; what makes it so moisturising is that it helps the skin hold onto water more effectively.

This means bounce and plumpness will be restored in your skin, and you will notice an overall healthier complexion.

Profhilo is what we call a lunchtime treatment, so it really doesn’t take long to rejuvenate your skin! The procedure involves 10 perfectly placed injections to reach your skin goals – you may feel slight pain when it’s administered, but it soon subsides, plus there is little downtime following your appointment.

Most patients have two to three sessions a month apart to see optimal results, which then last up to 6 months, but you can book your top-ups with our expert team to keep the incredible effects going.

You can expect to see rejuvenated skin after only a week, but optimal results are typically seen after 6-8 weeks, as this allows time for collagen and elastin to regenerate.

Although many patients opt for Profhilo on the face, this can also be applied to the body, treating skin laxity in key areas such as the neck, decolletage, arms and abdomen.
